Tasting Note | Wine Advocate (WA/RP) 96-97/100 - Vintage 2005 - David Schildknecht The 2005 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes – from 75-year-old vines in stony, iron-rich soil up against the Latricieres and Combottes – displays aroma of deep, dark, liqueur-like berry fruit laced with wood smoke, aromatic herbs and chocolate; a brothy, rich, carnal as well as sweetly berry-fruited palate impression; obvious, yet-fine grained tannins, and an almost traumatic intensity and persistence. This mysterious and powerful yet elegant masterpiece-in-the-making looks to require even more time in a cellar than the Charmes to do it justice. Wine Spectator (WS) 96/100 - Vintage 2005 A stunning red. Deep, dark and concentrated, offering blackberry, cassis, plum and sandalwood aromas and flavors that glide across the silky texture. The tannins emerge on the back end, but are eventually enveloped by the sweet fruit on the long finish. Best from 2015 through 2040. - BS BH 93/100 - Vintage 2005 An earthy and distinctly animale nose combines with a mix of darker berry fruit aromas that can also be found on the rich, concentrated and intense full-bodied and well muscled flavors that are robust to the point of a background hint of rusticity yet the ample sap rounds off the very firm finish at present. This is firmly tannic but not tough or aggressive though it will need a decade of bottle age to see it at its best. |
