Grand Cru Classes

GRAND CRU CLASSES?

A Chateau (wine estate called in Bordeaux Wine Region) that made the grade about 150 years ago.

Grand Cru Classes is a classification of Bordeaux Wines developed by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce back in 1855. The merchants named 61 top red wines- 60 from the Medoc and the one from Graves (Pessac-Leognan). These 61 wines were being divided into 5 categories, known as crus or growths according to the prices fetched at the time and the existing reputations of the wines. These classified growths enjoy special prestige among wine lovers. To become one of the Great Growths, it was very much precious and appreciated since they were among the best comparing to 8000 chateaux (and over 13000 wine producers) in Bordeaux!
